Sowing Seeds for Life is a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization incorporated in 2005 whose mission is to eliminate
hunger. SSFL is a part of America’s Second Harvest whose mission is
"feeding America’s hungry through a nationwide network of member
food banks and engaging our country in the fight to end hunger."
SSFL provides food to those who have been placed in difficult
situations due to illness, accident, or misfortune and are in need
of basic living essentials. Since food distribution began in
December 2007, SSFL has grown from providing food to 100 people a
month to over 1,000! In fall 2008, SSFL chartered its first sister
food pantry in Sweden, Maine – "Sowing Seeds for Life: Sweden
House."
SSFL strives to not only help with immediate needs, but to begin
a relationship encompassed in trust so we may help with other needs
such as clothing, education, and housing.
Through the help of gracious donors from the community and beyond
and with help from our amazing volunteers, SSFL distributes food
regularly on the first and third Wednesdays of every month from 3 –
5 p.m. in La Verne, CA and from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Sweden, ME.
During these "food pantry days," SSFL conducts cooking classes,
gardening classes, and other fun events for community children to
enjoy such as arts and crafts activities. SSFL also has plans for
more unique ways to help those in need such as arranging for
officials to educate them about local tax services and food-stamp
programs.
SSFL is deeply committed to planting educational seeds in the
minds and spirits of the community’s children. We believe in helping
to harvest an educated and healthy crop of young people to
successfully lead our community into the future.
It is our devout hope that those who receive SSFL goods and
services will be strengthened in mind, body and spirit.
